Portraits
At the start of 2015 I made the move to Berlin, where I hoped to gain a visa as an artist. To bolster my chances, I began work on a new series of portraits to show at the immigration office.
With the help of a few friends, I gathered a collection of reference photos and got to work. Using only India ink, water, and some thoroughly abused paint brushes, I was able to achieve a moody, sometimes unsettling texture.
As I approach my ninth year here in Berlin, I think it’s safe to say these paintings served their purpose well at the immigration office. Now they sleep in storage, waiting to be hung on a gallery wall or packaged and sent to a happy collector with a taste for the dark and mysterious.
